BigPicture Jira Alternatives and Big Picture Jira Plugin Pricing
BigPicture is one of the most installed portfolio apps on the Atlassian Marketplace, and for a PMO that wants Gantt charts, baselines and a risk register without leaving Jira, it still does that job well. The question at renewal is different. Appfire repriced its Jira apps on July 1, 2026, the bill covers every Jira user on the instance, and many PMOs find they open two or three of its modules. This page sorts the alternatives by the module you would be replacing.
Portfolio Hub is priced per workspace with published plans, from $24.50 a month billed yearly or $49 monthly, not per Jira seat. The demo portfolio opens on signup, already scored, ranked and planned against capacity.
The best BigPicture alternative depends on which BigPicture module you actually use. If it is the cross-team timeline, Plans in Jira Premium covers it with no extra app. If it is roll ups and custom hierarchies, Structure by Tempo is the closest match. If it is only the Gantt chart, Appfire's own BigGantt is cheaper. If it is scaled agile planning, look at Jira Align or Atlassian Focus. If the real gap is deciding which initiatives to fund, no Jira app is built for that, and a separate portfolio decision layer is the honest answer.
Why a Jira app renewal costs more than the PMO uses
Atlassian Marketplace apps are licensed at the same user tier as the Jira site they are installed on. You cannot buy BigPicture for the eight people in the PMO when the instance has 400 Jira users; the app is priced on all 400. That is the single biggest reason PMOs reprice the decision at renewal, and it applies to every Marketplace app on this page, not only to BigPicture.
None of this makes BigPicture overpriced for a PMO that runs most of its process in it. It does mean the per-user headline is the wrong number to compare. Divide the annual quote by the people who use the app every week, then compare that figure with each option below.
What replaces each BigPicture module
BigPicture is several tools in one app. Most teams lean on two or three of them. Tick the ones you use; the replacement follows from that, not from a vendor ranking.
Schedules, dependencies, baselines, critical path
Work breakdown across projects with roll ups
Program increment planning across agile teams
Capacity and allocation by person and skill
Risk matrix and register tied to Jira issues
Programs and portfolios grouped into boxes
The last tile is where most switching projects go wrong. BigPicture's overview groups work that is already approved and running in Jira. It is a strong monitoring view. It is not where a portfolio office ranks proposals against a budget and draws a funding line, and replacing it with another monitoring view leaves that gap exactly where it was. The project prioritization tool page shows what the decision side looks like.
BigPicture alternatives compared on scope, price model and fit
Prices change and several vendors quote rather than publish, so this table shows how each option is priced rather than a list price that would be stale in a quarter. Where a vendor publishes, check its own page on the day you build the business case.
| Option | Vendor | What it covers | How it is priced | Where it beats BigPicture | Where BigPicture wins |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plans (formerly Advanced Roadmaps) | Atlassian | Cross-project timeline of epics, dependencies, team capacity, scenarios | Included in Jira Premium and Enterprise | No separate app to buy or admin if you already run Premium | Baselines, risk register, resource planning by person and skill |
| Structure | Tempo | Flexible hierarchies and roll ups of any Jira issues, with PPM and capacity add-ons | Marketplace, per Jira user tier | Custom hierarchies and formula roll ups across any projects | Classic Gantt scheduling and risk modules in one app |
| BigGantt | Appfire | Gantt charts, auto scheduling, dependencies, critical path | Marketplace, per Jira user tier, a lower tier than BigPicture | Cheaper if the Gantt chart is all you use | Everything beyond the Gantt view |
| Jira Align | Atlassian | Scaled agile from team to portfolio: trains, increments, portfolio epics, OKRs, budgets | Quoted, sold as an enterprise program | Native SAFe across many release trains | Cost, setup time, and classic project views |
| Focus | Atlassian | Goals, work, teams and funds mapped to strategic priorities | Quoted, sold in the Strategy Collection | Strategy and funding tied to Jira delivery at enterprise scale | Fit for a single PMO with a few hundred users |
| Enterprise PPM with a Jira connector | Planview, Clarity, Planisware | Demand, financials, timesheets and resources across all project types | Quoted, annual contract plus implementation | Work that never lives in Jira, and formal financial control | Time to value, and teams never leave Jira |
| Portfolio Hub workspace | Portfolio Hub | Scoring, funding line, capacity plan by role, stage gate packs, Excel export; does not sync with Jira | Published per workspace, from $24.50 a month | Ranking and funding proposals before they become Jira work | Anything inside Jira itself: Gantt, boards, issue roll ups |
Two of these combine well. Plans in Jira Premium for the delivery timeline plus a decision workspace for the funding round covers most of what mid-sized PMOs bought BigPicture for, without a per-user app on top. Our wider guide to Jira portfolio management software covers the same options from the Atlassian side.
Keep BigPicture, switch, or split the job
| If your PMO | Best move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Uses Gantt, scope, resources and risks every week | Renew BigPicture | You are using what you pay for; no alternative bundles all four inside Jira |
| Only opens the Gantt chart | Move to BigGantt | Same vendor, same data, a cheaper app |
| Already pays for Jira Premium and mostly uses the timeline | Move to Plans | The capability is already in your subscription |
| Needs custom hierarchies more than scheduling | Evaluate Structure | Roll ups across any issue types are its core job |
| Runs ten or more release trains on SAFe | Evaluate Jira Align | Framework-aware planning at that scale is what Align is for |
| Tracks delivery well but cannot agree what to fund | Keep delivery in Jira, add a decision layer | The missing piece is scoring, a funding line and a capacity check by role |
If you are inside the renewal window, use it. Appfire gave existing customers 60 days from July 1, 2026 to renew at the previous price, and later renewals land on the new table. A one year renewal at a known price while you trial an alternative is often cheaper than a rushed migration.
BigPicture boxes turned into a ranked funding list
Here is the decision a portfolio layer produces from the programs a PMO usually keeps as BigPicture boxes. The Jira projects underneath do not move. What changes is that the proposals are scored once, ranked, and cut where the money and the people run out.
The four funded initiatives cost $2.8M, so the $3.1M budget alone would have let the mobile app in. The 26 engineers are what bind: the first four take all of them. BigPicture's resource module would show that overload once the work is planned in Jira. A decision layer shows it before approval, which is when saying no costs nothing.
Moving the portfolio decision out of BigPicture in one afternoon
- Export the boxes. List every program and portfolio box with its sponsor, budget and the Jira projects inside it. Twenty to forty rows is a typical first load, and that list goes straight into the register.
- Enter capacity by role. Engineers, QA, design, data, with the FTE each has for new work after support. This replaces the person-level view in the resource module with the role-level view a funding decision needs.
- Score and rank. Rate each initiative 1 to 5 on strategic fit, value, urgency, confidence and risk. The ranking and the funding line recompute as you go.
- Hand the approved list back to Jira. Funded work keeps running in Jira under Plans, BigGantt or BigPicture itself. Export the register to Excel or build a stage gate decision pack for the approval meeting.
The BigPicture customers this fits, and the ones it does not
PMOs paying for the whole instance
When a handful of people make the portfolio calls, a per-workspace decision layer next to Plans can replace a per-user app on every Jira seat.
Portfolio leads stuck in status reviews
If the monthly review walks through BigPicture boxes and never ends with a funded list, the missing step is a ranking and a cut-off, not another view.
IT and product orgs with mixed work
Rank infrastructure, compliance and product initiatives together, including proposals that do not exist as Jira projects yet.
Not a fit for scheduling inside Jira
If your project managers live in the BigPicture Gantt with baselines and critical paths, keep it or move to BigGantt. We do not replace Jira-side scheduling.
Questions PMOs ask about BigPicture for Jira
What is BigPicture in Jira?
BigPicture is a project and portfolio management app for Jira sold on the Atlassian Marketplace by Appfire, which bought its maker SoftwarePlant in 2021. It adds Gantt charts, a work breakdown scope view, agile boards for program increments, resource and risk modules, and a portfolio overview that groups Jira projects into programs.
How much does BigPicture cost?
BigPicture is priced per Jira user on the Atlassian Marketplace, in tiers that cover every user on the instance, not only the people who open the app. Appfire published new prices effective July 1, 2026, and gave existing customers 60 days from that date to renew at the previous price. Check the current tier on the Marketplace calculator.
What is the difference between BigPicture and BigGantt?
Both come from Appfire. BigGantt is a Gantt chart app for Jira with scheduling, dependencies and a critical path. BigPicture includes that Gantt view and adds scope, boards, resources, risks and portfolio grouping. If your PMO only uses the Gantt module in BigPicture, BigGantt does the same job at a lower tier price.
What is the alternative to BigPicture in Jira?
The usual alternatives are Plans in Jira Premium for cross-team roadmaps, Structure by Tempo for hierarchies and roll ups, BigGantt for Gantt only, Jira Align or Atlassian Focus for enterprise portfolio planning, an enterprise PPM platform with a Jira connector, or a separate portfolio decision workspace for scoring and funding.
Can Jira Plans replace BigPicture?
For cross-project timelines, dependencies and team capacity, often yes, and Plans comes with Jira Premium and Enterprise at no extra app cost. Plans does not offer classic project baselines, a risk register, or resource planning by skill and person the way BigPicture does, so check which modules your PMO really uses before you switch.
Is BigPicture available on Jira Cloud and Data Center?
Yes. Appfire sells BigPicture for Jira Cloud and for Data Center through the Atlassian Marketplace, with separate price tables for each. Atlassian is moving Data Center customers toward Cloud, so a BigPicture renewal on Data Center is a good moment to price the Cloud tier and the alternatives side by side.
