Planview vs Kiplot Comparison and Pricing for PMO and Portfolio Finance Buyers
Planview is the broad enterprise suite with deep resource management. Kiplot is the narrower, faster platform built around portfolio financials and agile roll-up. Neither publishes a price, so the comparison that matters is which one settles the decision your steering group keeps failing to make.
Portfolio Hub is priced per workspace in US dollars, from $24.50 a month billed yearly or $49 monthly. The demo portfolio opens on signup, already scored, ranked and planned against capacity by role.
Choose Planview when resource management across thousands of people and breadth under one vendor are the main job. Choose Kiplot when portfolio financials, ERP reconciliation and a quicker rollout across agile and waterfall work matter more. Planview is a private, Austin-based family of portfolio products quoted with services, where buyers on the Vendr marketplace report a median contract near $72,000 a year. Kiplot is an independent London vendor with three quoted plans, Core, Enterprise and Enterprise+, and no public price. If the real gap is ranking and funding work against capacity, a scoring workspace answers it for far less than either.
Two vendors built for different sizes of problem
Both products connect strategy to funding and delivery. They differ in how much organization they expect you to bring to them.
Planview
A family of portfolio products assembled largely by acquisition, with Planview Portfolios as the flagship and AdaptiveWork, AgilePlace, ProjectPlace, PPM Pro and ProjectAdvantage around it.
- Private, backed by TPG and TA Associates, based in Austin, Texas
- Strongest at enterprise resource management and scale
- Quoted per deployment, usually with a services engagement
- Rollout is heavier and often partner-led
Kiplot
One strategic portfolio management platform covering OKRs, roadmaps, prioritization, capacity, business cases, cost forecasting and benefits, with live links to Jira and Azure DevOps.
- Kiplot Ltd, independent, based in London
- Strongest at portfolio financials and ERP links
- Three quoted plans, sold as an annual subscription
- Rollout is lighter, with a success manager on Enterprise
Why Kiplot shows up next to a vendor many times its size
Kiplot's named customers on its own site include Capita, Prudential, TSB, RAKBANK and 10x Banking. That list tells you where it wins: regulated, finance-heavy portfolios where the PMO has a finance partner who wants budget, forecast and actuals to reconcile with the general ledger.
Those are the same buyers Planview has sold to for years. So the shortlist forms on its own: the incumbent enterprise suite on one side, a younger platform promising a faster rollout and a cleaner finance story on the other. A US team should also know that Kiplot's Gartner Peer Insights listing describes SaaS hosting in the US as well as the UK, EU, Middle East and Asia Pacific, so data residency is a question to confirm in the quote, not a reason to rule it out.
Planview vs Kiplot side by side
Every row comes from what the two vendors publish about themselves or from buyer reports we name. Where something is not public, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Question | Planview | Kiplot |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns it | Private. TPG and TA Associates bought it in a deal that closed in December 2020 | Kiplot Ltd, independent, London |
| Product shape | Several named products, many acquired: Portfolios, AdaptiveWork, AgilePlace, ProjectPlace, PPM Pro, ProjectAdvantage | One platform sold in three plans |
| Strongest at | Enterprise resource management, scale, breadth of use cases under one vendor | Portfolio financials, ERP links, agile and hybrid roll-up |
| Typical buyer | Large enterprises across industries | Financial services and technology PMOs |
| Delivery tool links | Enterprise agile and team-of-teams delivery through its own products and connectors | Jira and Azure DevOps integration in every plan |
| ERP and finance links | Available, scoped per deployment | SAP, Oracle, Dynamics and Workday, in the Enterprise+ plan |
| AI features | Ask for the current list and which product each lives in | Portfolio agents that check data quality, validate RAG status and chase actions |
| Public list price | None for the portfolio products | None |
| Rollout effort | Heavier, often partner-led | Lighter, with a success manager on Enterprise |

What Planview and Kiplot cost, and what each quote hides
Neither vendor will give you a number without a sales conversation. What you can do is know the shape of each quote before the first call, and ask for the same lines from both so the totals compare.
| Line | Planview | Kiplot | Ask both for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Quoted by product, named user type and modules | Annual subscription priced on the capabilities selected and the number of users | The pricing unit in writing, and what counts as a user |
| What buyers report | Vendr reports a median contract of $72,408 a year, with most tracked deals between about $51,000 and $80,000 | No reliable public figure. Treat any number you read as a single deal | Year one and year two totals, not a per-user rate |
| Services | Vendr says implementation commonly adds 20 to 50 percent to first-year cost | Lighter rollout, but ERP integration can be services work | The services estimate as its own line, fixed price where possible |
| The tier trap | The capability you need may sit in a different Planview product | Financial controls and ERP links sit in Enterprise and Enterprise+ | Which plan or product carries each of your three must-have features |
| Executive readers | License tiers separate editors from reviewers and viewers | Ask how read-only seats are counted | The price of a read-only seat for the steering group |
| Renewal | Quoted, multi-year terms are common | Volume-based pricing on Enterprise | The renewal uplift cap in the first contract |
Our Planview pricing and license cost breakdown collects every buyer-reported figure we could source, product by product.
Which one to pick, and when to pick neither
Feature lists will not separate these two, because both tick most rows. The situation you are in does.
Pick Planview when
You plan resources for thousands of people, several business units need different portfolio products, or the company already runs a Planview platform and one vendor matters more than the best fit for one office.
Pick Kiplot when
Finance sits inside the portfolio process, actuals must reconcile with SAP, Oracle, Dynamics or Workday, delivery runs in Jira or Azure DevOps, and you want to be live in months with a smaller vendor paying closer attention.
Look at a third suite when
The portfolio is a product or R&D pipeline, where Planisware is the usual finalist, or the business runs on Microsoft 365, where OnePlan fits better than either.
Pick neither when
You have fewer than a few hundred initiatives, no administrator to own the platform, and the unsolved problem is that more work is approved than the teams can deliver. That is a ranking and capacity decision, not a platform purchase.
Run the same four checks in both demos
Bring twenty real initiatives, your real role list and one finance export to each vendor. A scripted demo portfolio always looks cleaner than yours, and it never contains the decision your steering group is arguing about.
- Force the cut. Set the budget below total demand and ask for a ranked list with a visible line and a reason for each item under it.
- Break capacity by role. Move one start date by a quarter and watch what happens to the gap for each role, month by month.
- Reconcile one initiative. Load budget and actuals from your ERP export and get the variance without a spreadsheet in between.
- Price the scope you saw. Ask which product or plan carried every feature in the demo, and get that list with the quote.
The first two checks are the ones that most often decide the purchase, and you can run them before either demo. Our project prioritization tool scores and ranks the register against a funding line, and the resource capacity planning tool shows the gap by role for twelve months. Walk into both demos with that output and ask each vendor to reproduce it.
Where Portfolio Hub fits next to Planview and Kiplot
We sell this product, so read the last column as our view and test it on your own data. It does not sync Jira and it does not reconcile to SAP. It answers the question both platforms leave to the steering group.
| Job | Planview | Kiplot | Portfolio Hub |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rank initiatives on agreed criteria | Yes, inside a larger suite | Yes, in every plan | Yes. Weighted scoring model, score from 0 to 100 |
| Show what fits inside capacity | Yes, with deep resource management | Yes, capacity planning in every plan | Yes. Funding line and a twelve month plan by role |
| Sync delivery tools live | Yes | Yes, Jira and Azure DevOps | No. Spreadsheet import, including a Planview or Jira export |

| Stage gate decision records | Yes | Approval workflows on Enterprise | Yes. Gate packs generated as Excel files |
| Price | Quoted | Quoted | Published, per workspace, from $24.50 a month billed yearly |
| Time to a first ranked portfolio | After implementation | After onboarding | The day you load the register |
Plenty of teams use a workspace like this for one planning cycle while the platform selection runs, then decide whether they still need the platform. The category, with every shape it sells in, is on our strategic portfolio management software page.
Questions buyers ask about Planview and Kiplot
Is Kiplot better than Planview?
Kiplot is the better fit when portfolio financials, ERP reconciliation and a quick rollout across agile and waterfall work matter most. Planview is the better fit when resource management across thousands of people and breadth under one vendor are the main job. Kiplot is narrower and faster; Planview is broader and heavier. Neither is better in general.
How much does Kiplot cost compared with Planview?
Neither publishes a price. Kiplot sells three quoted plans, Core, Enterprise and Enterprise+, as an annual subscription priced on capabilities and users. Planview quotes per product and user type, and the Vendr marketplace reports a median Planview contract of about $72,000 a year, with implementation commonly adding 20 to 50 percent in year one.
Who are Kiplot's main competitors?
Kiplot competes with Planview and Broadcom Clarity at the enterprise end, with OnePlan and PPM Express where delivery runs in Microsoft 365 or several tools, and with Meisterplan when capacity scenarios are the core need. Smaller PMOs also weigh it against a focused scoring and capacity workspace priced per workspace.
Is Kiplot a US company?
No. Kiplot Ltd is an independent vendor based in London, and its named customers are mostly UK and international financial services firms. Its Gartner Peer Insights listing describes SaaS hosting in the US, UK, EU, Middle East and Asia Pacific, so US buyers should confirm the hosting region and support hours in the quote.
Does Kiplot integrate with Jira and Azure DevOps?
Yes. Jira and Azure DevOps integration is part of the Core plan, so delivery data rolls up next to financials without a manual import. ERP links to SAP, Oracle, Dynamics and Workday sit in the top plan, Enterprise+, which is the tier many finance-led buyers end up needing.
Planisware vs Kiplot, which one fits?
Planisware fits product development and R&D pipelines with long horizons and phase gates, typically in pharma, aerospace and manufacturing. Kiplot fits finance-heavy change portfolios in banks, insurers and technology firms that mix agile and waterfall delivery. If your portfolio is a product pipeline, shortlist Planisware; if it is a transformation portfolio, shortlist Kiplot.
Can a smaller PMO skip both Planview and Kiplot?
Often, yes. Below a few hundred initiatives, with no dedicated administrator, the rollout tends to cost more than the decision is worth. A register, one scoring model everyone applies the same way, a funding line and a capacity plan by role cover the steering group decision, from $24.50 a month billed yearly.
